Description |
This course compares and contrasts Chinese and Western society, history, literature and scholarship. Through the study of specific literary and popular culture texts, the course examines the nature of self-image and cultural identity east and west. Attention is paid to unconscious and unarticulated beliefs and assumptions that underlie behaviors in China and in the West. A problem posing approach is taken to understanding cultural differences and to resolving conflicts arising in inter-cultural situations. Special emphasis is given to the role and function of fate and chance in Western and in Oriental traditions, along with the social construction of winning and losing in each culture.
