The Department of Portuguese of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities invites applications for the position of Full or Associate Professor of Portuguese in the following disciplines:
Portuguese Studies: Linguistics / Translation Studies/ Chinese-Occident Cultural Studies / Portuguese Literature Studies
The Department of Portuguese is an established and lively scholarly community that includes speakers of European Portuguese, Brazilian and other varieties of Portuguese. The department offers an undergraduate degree in Portuguese Studies concentrating on Portuguese as a Foreign Language with selected courses in interpretation and translation, foreign language pedagogy, literary studies and history. At the undergraduate level, the Department also teaches Portuguese language within the Faculty of Law and offers elective courses in Portuguese as a foreign language to students from all faculties of the University. At the postgraduate level, the Department offers three MA programmes (a MA in Portuguese Language and Intercultural Studies, a MA in Translation Studies (Portuguese-Chinese) and a MA in Second Language Acquisition) and two PhD areas in (i) Applied Linguistics (Portuguese) and (ii) Literary and Intercultural Studies (Portuguese).
Applicants must hold a PhD in Linguistics, Translation Studies, Chinese-Occident Cultural Studies, Portuguese Literature Studies or in a related area of PORTUGUESE STUDIES. Applicants should have an excellent record of internationally recognized research and publication and a demonstrated potential for outstanding research. Applicants should also have native or near-native fluency in Portuguese along with experience in teaching Portuguese as a second/foreign language. Applications in all areas of Portuguese Studies will be considered. A good command of English is also preferred. The position’s rank is open at Full or Associate Professor, although a senior appointment is preferred.
The selected candidate is expected to assume duty latest by January 2019.
Position and Remuneration
Remuneration and appointment rank offered will be competitive and commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification, current position and professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% - 7% after various discretionary exemptions.
