The Department of Communication of the Faculty of Social Sciences invites applications for the positions of Full Professor/Associate Professor/Assistant Professor/Senior Instructor in Communication, which are intended to complement and strengthen existing departmental expertise and curriculum/teaching requirements. We are specifically looking for applicants who have expertise and experience in the following areas: communication theory and cognate areas, public communication, and new media studies. It would be an advantage if candidates have familiarity with, and an ability to teach in, the Departmental General Education course in Public Speaking. The successful applicants would be expected to teach in and across some of the following courses: Interpersonal Communication, New Media Studies, Introduction to Public Relations, Fundamentals of Visual Culture, Introduction to Culture and Critical Communication, Communication Theory, Qualitative Research Methods, Organizational Communication, Gender, Media and Diversity and Public Speaking.
The Department of Communication currently offers broad-based curricula leading to Bachelor's and Master's degrees covering various areas of communication studies (communication theory, intercultural communication, organizational communication, communication skills); vocationally-oriented public communication (public relations, advertising, event planning); media studies and journalism (journalism writing and publication, mass media, new media, digital culture); cultural studies (cultural and critical theory, cinema, popular culture); public speaking; and creative media (video production, photography, animation). Candidates for the positions of Professor/Associate Professor must hold a PhD in a relevant area, and should have an outstanding record of research publications. Extensive experience of postgraduate supervision is a requirement for the rank of Professor. Candidates for the position of Assistant Professor must hold a PhD in a relevant area, and have a demonstrable capacity to develop a strong research profile. Candidates for the position of Senior Instructor must hold a postgraduate degree and/or extensive relevant industry experience. For the above-mentioned positions, candidates should have teaching experience and expertise in one or more of the following areas: communication theory; cultural & media studies; public communication and new media studies. While candidates must be fluent in English, ability to speak Chinese may be considered an asset, though it is not a prerequisite for the appointment.
The selected candidate may assume duty as early as August 2018.
Position and Remuneration
Remuneration and appointment rank offered will be competitive and commensurate with the successful applicants' academic qualification, current position and professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% - 7% after various discretionary exemptions.
